The One Small Change That ended up saving Me a Bin Bag a Week!
I love a waste-free experiment, and one of favorite experiments was ridiculously simple—but wildly effective. It’s cut down my rubbish so much that I’m saving a whole bin bag a week! And no, it’s not some complicated zero-waste magic. It’s… (drumroll)… storing my food scraps properly.
Wait, What?
Hear me out! I thought I was already a food waste queen—composting, freezing leftovers, and repurposing scraps like a pro. But I was still finding bits and pieces sneaking into the bin (hello, sad forgotten herbs and those weirdly slimy veggie ends). Turns out, a tiny tweak made all the difference!
What I Changed:

Instead of leaving scraps to wither away on the counter or tossing them into the bin in a rush, I started doing this:
✔ Keeping a ‘scrap jar’ in the freezer – This is where all the usable veggie offcuts go (hello, free homemade stock!)
✔ Freezing things immediately – No more “I’ll use that later” (spoiler: I never do). Peels, herbs, and citrus zest go straight to the freezer.
✔ Prepping smarter – Washing and storing veggies properly meant less wastage in the first place.
The Impact?
Less food waste (duh, but seriously, my bin is way emptier!)
Surprising savings – I stretched my groceries further and spent less!
Guilt-free kitchen vibes – It’s SO satisfying knowing I’m using everything.
Want to try it? I challenge you to keep track of your food scraps for a week and see how much you can divert!
