Terran from Te Anau!
Sometimes we come across someone at our workshops that really reminds us why we do what we do. Terran was one of those people.
When we were in Te Anau last year for some workshops, we had no idea we would run into such a passionate attendee as we did - let alone one that was 7 years old! Terran Yasar is a young dude with a heaps of passion, determination, and ideas!
Terran's mum sent through this picture, so we thought we'd share it along with a few questions we asked Terran. We love his answers, and think we could all learn a lot from this awesome young person.
How old are you, and where do you go to school?
I am 7 years old and go to Te Anau School.
What is your first memory of wanting to make a sustainable change?
To help the earth make more plants.
Why do you think it’s important that we all do our bit to help the planet?
To make the earth healthier, so the plants don't all die and humans become extinct.
What do you think is one thing all Kiwis could do to help?
Stop buying litter, and also stop throwing it on the ground out of cars.
Do you have friends who are keen to make a difference too?
Yes, Ethan Kelly.
What did you think of Kate’s workshop?
"Wow, she knows a lot about litter" and "It was night-time and I was so tired when it finished but it was warm in there".
What's something you'd like to see changed at school?
Kids in my class use plastic sealable sandwich bags only once then they throw it in the bin. I want to take it home to their mothers to wash it and out it back in their lunch instead of throwing away.
What did you and your mum learn from the workshop?:
In Southland you can only recycle numbers 1 and 2 and lids are not recyclable. That people have to go through all the recycling and sort it. Food scraps turn to methane in landfill. That only toilet paper should be flushed.
Terran also said that feels sad for the earth when he sees trash on the ground, even at the beach and hopes that alcohol bottles won't be broken up into glass on the sand. Terran believes that the only god humans have is the earth as that is our creator and without caring for earth, we have nothing!
